International Women’s Day at Kinsale Community School
Celebrating #GiveToGain and Inspiring the Next Generation
Kinsale Community School marked International Women’s Day with a vibrant and uplifting event built around this year’s theme, #GiveToGain. The celebration brought students and staff together to reflect on the power of mentorship, leadership, and community support in shaping opportunities for young women.
Deputy Principal Kathleen O’Brien opened the event by welcoming Transition Year and 5th Year students and highlighting the importance of creating inclusive spaces where young women feel empowered to lead, innovate, and support one another. Her message underscored the idea that by giving time, encouragement, and solidarity, everyone gains a stronger, more connected school community.
A diverse and inspiring panel offered students valuable insights into leadership, resilience, and the impact of women across different fields.
Muireann O’Donovan – Student Council & 5th Year
Muireann spoke about student leadership, representation, and the importance of young women using their voices to advocate for themselves and their peers. Her perspective showed students that leadership starts in the classroom and grows through active involvement.
Dr. Catherine Coughlan – Science Teacher & Advocate for Women in STEM/Academia
Dr. Coughlan shared her experiences in scientific research and academia, highlighting both the challenges and the exciting opportunities for women in STEM. She emphasised how giving support and building networks helps women progress in fields where they remain underrepresented.
Áine McKenna – Basketball Ireland & 3rd Year Year Head
Áine brought an energetic message about teamwork, dedication, and sport as a platform for confidence and community. Speaking from her role in Basketball Ireland, she encouraged students to embrace the discipline and joy that sport can bring.
Gemma Cooper – Maths & Computer Science Teacher, Women in STEM/Industry
Gemma offered insight into industry, careers, subject options in school and finding what you are really passionate about. Her story highlighted the value of diversity in strengths, talents and perspectives and celebrating each other’s differences.
Adding a warm and celebratory touch to the event, a group of talented Third Year girls performed for the audience, creating a memorable moment that showcased the creativity and spirit of Kinsale Community School’s students.
This year’s International Women’s Day event at Kinsale Community School embodied the essence of #GiveToGain—sharing stories, offering guidance, and inspiring the next generation of women to step forward with confidence. Through the leadership of Deputy Principal Kathleen O’Brien and the contributions of an exceptional panel, students were reminded that by supporting one another, everyone grows stronger.
The event, organised by Ms. Aoife Houlihan, not only celebrated women’s achievements but also encouraged students to continue building a community rooted in generosity, courage, and ambition.
