Bernadette McAliskey inspires Senior Cycle Students at Kinsale Community School

Senior Cycle students at Kinsale Community School had the privilege of welcoming renowned civil rights activist and former MP Bernadette McAliskey to the school for a powerful and thought-provoking talk organised by the Kinsale Peace Project.

Bernadette McAliskey is widely recognised as one of the most influential figures of the civil rights movement in Northern Ireland. First elected to the British Parliament in 1969 at just 21 years of age, she became one of the youngest MPs in Westminster history and a prominent voice for civil rights, social justice, and equality during a pivotal period in Irish history.

Speaking to students in the school hall, Ms McAliskey shared reflections on her experiences growing up in Northern Ireland, her involvement in the civil rights movement, and the wider social and political context of the late 1960s and 1970s. Her talk explored themes of democracy, activism, courage, and the responsibility of citizens to engage critically with society.

Students listened with great interest as she described the challenges faced by campaigners for equality and the importance of peaceful civic engagement. Her message encouraged students to think deeply about the values of justice, respect, and dialogue — principles that underpin the work of the Kinsale Peace Project.

The visit provided a valuable real-world connection to topics studied in subjects such as History, Politics and Society, and English. Students had the opportunity to ask thoughtful questions about her experiences and the lessons that young people today can take from the past.

The Kinsale Peace Project brings influential voices and perspectives into the school, helping students to explore issues of peacebuilding, democracy, and human rights. Events such as this allow students to engage directly with individuals who have played significant roles in shaping modern history.

Kinsale Community School would like to extend sincere thanks to Bernadette McAliskey for sharing her time, insights, and experiences with our students. Her visit provided an inspiring and memorable learning experience for all in attendance.
